Since entering the Iraqi market in 2008 through the strategic acquisition of Orascom Cement, Lafarge has transformed local manufacturing standards, combining deep local heritage with world-class Swiss and French industrial technology.
Our Industrial Footprint
We operate a massive network of production facilities that serve as the backbone of Iraq’s reconstruction. Our operations are anchored by two strategic industrial complexes:
The Bazian Cement Plant (Sulaymaniyah): A state-of-the-art facility located in the rugged terrain of the Kurdistan Region. With a production capacity exceeding 2.5 million tons annually, this plant utilizes advanced dry-process kilns and automated quality control systems to produce high-performance cement from the surrounding limestone mountains.
The Karbala Cement Plant (Karbala): Following a massive $270 million rehabilitation project completed in 2016, this facility was transformed from an aging state-owned asset into a modern industrial giant. Located strategically to serve Baghdad and southern Iraq, it blends heavy industrial resilience with modern filtration and automation technologies, boasting a capacity of nearly 2 million tons per year.
Products That Build Iraq
We do not just sell cement; we provide the specific "recipes" needed for Iraq’s unique environment. Our portfolio includes "Karasta," a specialized blended cement famous among Iraqi masons for its superior workability and finishing qualities, and "Al-Jisr" (The Bridge), a sulfate-resistant cement (SRC) engineered specifically to withstand the high-salinity soil conditions found in central and southern Iraq. These products are rigorously tested in our robotic laboratories to ensure they meet both Iraqi (IQS) and European (EN) standards.
